Where Are They Now – Njoki Coleman

What did you study and when did you graduate?

MA TV Journalism, Dec 2017

What did you do as a CEN8 volunteer?

I was a video creator. I filmed and edited some of the volunteer of the month videos as well as the CEN8Kids final performances.

What was the most useful thing you learnt by being a volunteer?

How to edit. I had little to no editing experience before I started volunteering with CEN8. Editing video was highly required on my course, which was daunting because I had never done it before.  Making videos for CEN8 built my confidence as an editor, which I channelled during my studies at Goldsmiths and will keep forever.

What was the best thing about volunteering?

My newfound love for creating videos. I love filming and editing, truly! Being creative with visuals gives me so much joy; I absolutely love it.  And without volunteering with CEN8, my newfound joy would be unknown.

What have you been up to since leaving Goldsmiths?

I’ve just been hired as an Associate News Producer for a local television station, WJAX in Jacksonville, Florida.

Has/how volunteering for CEN8 impacted you since you left?

I have this inner urge to create video content. CEN8 got my creative ideas flowing in a way like never before. I have many ideas bouncing in my head. I want to share them and to continue growing as a video creator.

What career advice would you students currently at university?

Listen to your tutors! They know your industry of study very well.  Soak in every bit of knowledge and information from them while you can before you graduate, because you’ll miss them after you do.
